The Expanding Your Horizons Conference at Mills College
A special conference for 6th-8th grade girls in Alameda
and Contra Costa counties who are interested in exploring careers that
involve science and mathematics.
Conference Goals
- To increase young women’s interest in mathematics and science
- To make young women aware of the great variety of career opportunities
for women in math- and science-related fields
- To provide young women an opportunity to meet and form personal
contacts with women working in traditionally male occupations
Background of Expanding Your Horizons at Mills College
In 1976, Mills hosted the very first Expanding Your Horizons
Conference, organized by women educators, scientists, mathematicians,
corporate representatives, and community leaders whose mission was to
promote math and science education among junior high and high school
girls so that a wider range of career opportunities would remain open
to them. Since that first conference, more than half a million young women have
attended
nation-wide
EYH conferences that have exposed them to the fascinations, challenges,
and great opportunities for women in these fields. The Mills
EYH Conference belongs to a
consortium
which sponsors three East Bay/Central Valley conference sites.
